First podium for GCK BILSTEIN!

FIA World Rallycross Championship Double-Header in Barcelona

The BILSTEIN teams are back in the FIA World Rallycross Championship and showed a really strong performance in Barcelona. One of the reasons for this: a new Evo stage of the BILSTEIN 5-way EVO RX shock absorbers.

The fourth double header of the season in Barcelona started with a promising fourth-best time in free practice on Saturday morning. As a result, Anton Marklund as well as Andreas Bakkerud and Liam Doran qualified for the semi-final races.

In the semi-final, however, Anton Marklund in the GCK BILSTEIN Renault Mégane had to retire. Liam Doran in the Renault Mégane of the Monster Energy GCK RX Cartel team was also unable to qualify for the final. His team-mate made it better: Andreas Bakkerud only had to admit defeat to the two ex-world champions Mattias Ekström and Johan Kristoffersson in the semi-final. In the final, however, he only managed sixth place.

Anton Marklund was on fire for sunday´s races: “BILSTEIN have put in a new evolution of the damper since the last round and this hard work has really paid off, the car feels great. (…) The car felt fantastic again in the semi-finals and we just missed out on a spot in the final having got stuck in a little bit of traffic. P4 today feels great though because I can really feel the potential of the car for tomorrow now.” So for the next day it was time to go full attack.

In the qualifying races on Sunday, the BILSTEIN teams were able to improve continuously from race to race. Impressive: the performance in Q3 with the fastest time for Andreas Bakkerud and the third fastest time for Anton Marklund. In the semi-final of the eighth round of the World Rallycross Championship, both once again claimed their ambitions for a place at the top: Andreas Bakkerud and Anton Marklund secured first and third place – and thus moved into the final.

The final race then thrilled with spectacular action. Unfortunately with a sudden end for Andreas Bakkerud: In corner one Johan Kristoffersson in the VW Polo left no place for the Norwegian, Bakkerud was levered out by Kristoffersson’s Polo and collided in second position, first with the tire stack and then with Robin Larsson. So close together are defeat and triumph: While Andreas Bakkerud had to park his Renault Mégane, Kristoffersson was able to take home victory.

Anton Marklund was able to stay out of all the skirmishes and drove to third place – the first podium finish for GCK BILSTEIN this season! “I’m really really happy for all of GCK and BILSTEIN”, said Anton Marklund summing up the weekend. “While I was at home trying to relax and doing analysis in between races, they’ve worked super hard at the workshop and the factory to bring us a race-ready car with significant improvements since Finland RX. I’m just so happy that they’ve made it work and they now have a car that races extremely well and is fully back on pace. We just have to build on this now and we have a race win in us still”.

From 21 to 22 November, Anton Marklund and the BILSTEIN teams will have the next chance for the first victory of the season in Spa-Francorchamps.
