Non-compliant bumper mounting prevents Anton Marklund’s debut victory

FIA World Rallycross Championship

The performance curve of Anton Marklund points upwards. After his podium finish at the last round of the FIA Rallycross World Championship in Silverstone, the Swede took 1st place at the WorldRX of Norway. Anton was overwhelmed with joy when he climbed on the roof of his Renault Mégane by GCK after crossing the finish line, clenched his fists and celebrated his first victory in the World Championship. But the joy lasted only briefly.

Hours after the victory in Hell, Norway, the bad news came in the form of a message from the FIA: the Renault Mégane had not complied with the regulations. The material thickness of a tube of the front bumper mounting was criticised. Instead, Niclas Grönholm inherited the victory in the Hyundai i20.

On the racing Sunday, Anton Marklund had steadily improved himself and was extremely focused. He was ready for his first World Cup victory. After the two BILSTEIN-equipped Renault Mégane had qualified for the semifinals, Anton Marklund, runner-up in the second semi-final, indicated that he could be expected in the final.

In the final, the Swede first had to line up second behind Englishman Liam Doran in the Audi S1, but pushed hard in difficult weather conditions. On the final lap Anton Marklund passed the Audi driver and drove towards a supposedly safe victory – which was ultimately blocked by a bumper tube that did not conform to the rules.
