Race 6 of the FIA Rallycross World Championship in Sweden

Despite fast times: A wasted weekend for Anton Marklund and Guerlain Chicherit

For Guerlain Chicherit and Anton Marklund the weekend was wasted at the sixth round of the 2019 FIA Rallycross World Championship (WRX) in Höljes, Sweden. On the traditional track, the two World Championship pilots of GC Kompetition had to accept a disappointing overall result despite fast lap times.

The weekend started rather mediocre: In difficult conditions on Saturday, Guerlain and Anton drove fast times, but struggled with the weather – and turn 1, which caused a lot of chaos and many, many touches. The more than 48,000 spectators were thrilled by the action.

Guerlain and Anton would certainly not have complained about less spectacle. The numerous action-packed duels on the track also led to many warnings and time penalties, which also caught the two drivers in their Renault Mégane R.S. equipped with BILSTEIN.

After Guerlain had set the second fastest time in the second qualifying race on Saturday, the Frenchman, like his Swedish teammate, collected a 5-second time penalty on Sunday, which catapulted him out of the top 12. Anton saved himself at his home race in 9th place in the semi-finals.

Starting from the last row of the grid in the semi-final, Anton pushed hard from the start to somehow make it into the top three and qualify for the final. But it wasn’t enough: Ending up in fourth place, the 26-year-old narrowly missed the final. Anton could at least console himself with the fastest lap time of the two semi-finals.

In the end, none of the remaining favourites won the final: Timmy Hansen and Marcus Grönholm, for example, struggled with technical problems. It was guest entrant Sebastian Eriksson who won a razor-thin victory ahead of Kevin Hansen.
