Revitalize your BMW 5 Series E39 Touring and get your suspension back to OEM comfort

Cars with factory air suspension should only be repaired with high-quality replacement parts: Thus, the complex system can work without malfunctions for many years and show off the advantages of its operating principle. Our BILSTEIN B3 air springs are simple to install. Moreover, they contain 100% OE-quality components so you can be sure that they provide optimum performance and longevity. Installation is an aspect that is often overlooked but it is super-important. After all, if parts do not fit well or are difficult to install correctly it’s impossible to have an optimally functioning air suspension system. That’s why we include detailed installation instructions that are specific to each vehicle and show every step of the way.

The E39 Touring, which was available with an air-sprung rear axle as an option sets a good example as it is still quite common on the road. These cars are great load-luggers and can cover vast mileage with the proper care. One aspect that may require attention after high mileage is the air suspension. Follow us as we install BILSTEIN B3 air springs into this E39. Of course, everything is covered in the BILSTEIN B3 air spring installation documents that come supplied with the parts.

First you must lift the vehicle by the manufacturer’s recommended method, remove the wheels, the boot floor and trim. The ignition should be off and the air suspension fuse should be taken out of the fuse box when working on the air suspension system. At the top of the air spring, visible through the boot compartment, you can loosen the air supply line; this allows air pressure to leave the system. Be careful not to twist or kink the line. Once air pressure is released retighten the supply line to 2Nm. Now you can push down on the plug in coupling, compress the lock ring and remove the airline. Now extract air spring retaining clips from the top and then loosen the screw fastening the bottom of the air spring to the control arm. The old air spring can now be safely demounted and discarded.

Now you’re ready to install the BILSTEIN B3 air spring. The upper retaining clips can be fastened first and then the airline can be connected. It should give an audible click when connected correctly. This tells you that the locking ring has located well. The control arm may need to be supported with a jack in order to fix the lower retaining screw in place. Just 20Nm is required to hold the BILSTEIN B3 air spring to the lower control arm. All interior trim can now be remounted and the wheel reattached. Before lowering the car it’s important to refit the fuse and refill the air system via an OBD interface. You should never lower the car onto an empty air spring. Once inflated you should perform a pressure test and visually inspect your new BILSTEIN B3 air spring for creases or buckles from improper installation. Moreover, you should always replace air springs as a set to ensure proper operation and suspension systems should only be worked on by qualified individuals.

As a result, correctly installed BILSTEIN B3 air springs ensure smooth and level vehicle behavior and the same level of comfort and performance as if a new car had rolled off the production line. And this doesn’t only apply to the E39 Touring. BILSTEIN is the choice for numerous OE car manufactures around the globe, so you can be absolutely sure that B3 air springs will fit perfectly and last for many years to come.
