Phillip Vertessen’s Historic Racer

The 02 range of BMWs has a rich motorsport heritage. Before BMW’s ‘M’ division was established formally in 1972 BMW were doing the business on the race and rally scene with the 1600-2, 1602 and later the 2002. Each was equipped with BILSTEIN shock absorbers.

The ‘02’ range was designed to be a new entry level BMW. To introduce the new model to the world a motorsport program was introduced. It was a serious effort that continued through the model lifespan, culminating in a Nürburgring 24hr victory in 1970 for Hans Stück behind the wheel of a 2002Ti.

This is where Phillip Vertessen has found inspiration for his own project. A classic car enthusiast at heart, Phillip has taken an early 1600-2 model to base his build. Originally sold into Greece in the closing months of 1970, this 1600-2 will begin a new life emulating the famous ’02 racecars of yesteryear.

For suspension Phillip will also emulate the BMW works cars of the ‘70’s, as he puts it “ the reason? History! Just look at the old racecars, they all use BILSTEIN for a reason. BILSTEIN gives a great ride, control and stability. Yellow is the color!”
